Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) Therapy

What is Gestalt Language Processing?

Some children learn language in “chunks” or scripts rather than one word at a time. This is called Gestalt Language Processing (GLP). GLP is a natural and valid way of acquiring language that’s often seen in autistic children. These children may echo phrases from TV shows, songs, or familiar routines. You might hear your child say something like “let’s get outta here!” in a silly voice, even if they mean something totally different. This is their way of communicating. While it may sound like they’re just “copying,” this scripting is actually the first step toward meaningful communication! At Embark, we recognize this early language style and know how to support it gently and effectively.

Could My Child Be A Gestalt Language Processor?

Your child might be a GLP learner if he/she:

  • Echoes full phrases instead of single words (“Let’s go outside!” instead of “outside”)

  • Repeats lines from shows, songs, or books

  • Speaks in a sing-song or scripted tone

  • Uses the same phrases in different contexts (even if they don’t quite fit)

Sound familiar? Your child may be a gestalt language processor. GLP kids are creative, expressive, and often misunderstood. That’s where we come in!

What GLP Therapy Looks Like with Us

At Embark Speech Therapy, we don’t shut down scripts, we build from them. We follow a compassionate approach based on the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) framework. We meet kids where they’re at and support them step by step, moving from scripts to self-generated speech.

Our GLP therapy includes:

  • Play-based sessions that follow your child’s lead

  • Using their favorite shows, songs, or routines to build language

  • Modeling new scripts that are meaningful and flexible

  • Lots of movement, visuals, and connection

We're not focused on “fixing” speech- we’re focused on helping your child feel successful and understood.
